Default Break and Starting Problems

I just got a '01 S40 and it runs great, only problems are getting it started after it's been parked for more than 30 min. It has a hard start, read that it could be the fuel pressure regulator. Can I change this myself? Where can I buy the part for a good price? Where is the FPR located?

Also when I start the car, I have to give it a few seconds for the breaks to start working, after that the breaks work fine. otherwise I have to really step on the breaks for the car to stop. Any ideas what might be causing this?

The 2000 model has a brake pump recall. The recall work involved relocating the brake pump itself to a different location and replacing it with a different "improved" pump. The problem wasmoisture leaking into the pump assembly causing delay in braking function. I don't know if any 2001's had this problem, but it may be wise to check with the dealer on that!

FPR is located on the end of the fuel rail on the right hand side of the engine, under a plastic cover. Will post pictures!

You may want to check if that really is the problem.
Quote from tech: "Easiest way to check is to pull the vacuum line off the regulator after is has been sitting a little while and see if there is fuel in the vacuum line. If there is it is bad."

If so, apparently you only have to buy the regulator, not all the housing. Go to google shopping and search "Volvo fuel pressure regulator" and arrange results by base price. There should be some for ~$95. I haven't tried this before so if it doesn't work out [sm=boohoo.gif]

could be you're camshaft sensor is faulty, i know my s40 had similar problems before it would'nt start atall and still isn;t starting. Had a diagnostics test done and the reading was faulty camshaft sensor so i have to wait for a new one, so hopefully it will solve the car not starting atall issue and then i will know if it has solved the car hard to start sometimes beccause it done this regulary when it was going, i will keep you posted on how the car reacts ok. Dunno about your breaks but it sounds like they take a while to build pressure up before they become good, could be your master cylinder is defective a simple way to check this out is to, before you start your car, is press on the break pedal repeatedly and it should stiffen up so that you cant press it anymore but if it is able to be pressed after say maybe 6-7 go's then it may quite well maybe your master cylinder, hope this helps...

Yes, the complete unit including the 's' shaped tube that connects to the vacuum line and a new 'O' ring for the fuel rail connection.
