Default Broken Key Barrel

Hi all,
I took apart my s40 ignition key barrel and removed a broken lever and the lock pin tumblers. When everything was apart, the car would start if I placed the key in the transponder coil and turned the plastic switch with a screw driver to position 2. In position 1 the accessories light would show on dash, however when I did the same thing the next day, position 1 didn't light dash lights and position 2 wouldn't start the car. position 2 did light all lights on dash but wouldn't start car. The only thing I did over night was disconnect battery.
Has anyone got an idea of what this would be?
Also it seems like the key barrel is permanently fixed to the column as the bolt ends are covered with something. How can I remove it?

Any help appreciated.

Hi, I’m having a similar pain in the **** journey on this but mine relates to a broken barrel where the key won’t turn past position one. But I’ve been trying to remove the barrel mechanism from the steering column. Like you say the bolts have a smooth head on them and not designed for easy access, but I’ve seen on other forums that you have to try and use a chisel (sharp small metal chisel to make a dent in the bolt and then Tap it round). To be honest, I’m having some trouble doing this myself but it’s worth a try. failing that, you might need to get a mechanic or someone with the tools to weld a nut on top and then use a spanner. I’ve been trying to get into the barrel itself, seems like you’ve managed to achieve this but I really can’t see how you can get in on my one. There’s a small hole at the back of the transceiver. Inside there I can see the barrel turning. Is it something to do with that? All the best,Brad

I just realise your thread was five years ago so I’m sure you’ve moved on by now! Anyway, many thanks
