Key won't turn to start position C70 2001
Current situation: key will only turn to position I or O which means I cannot start it.
Before failure: stopped & turned off car on downhill slope, engaged parking brake.
After failure: used the shift lock override to roll to level ground; key still won't turn to III (or II); key won't turn to O or I (stays in between O-I), will not come out; clean shift lock button- can now remove key.
Background: brake pedal shudders and noise made when driving on bumpy downhill (everyday from driveway since 2004); ABS & Check Engine lights begin intermittent warnings (one or both since Spring 2005); STC light joins the intermittent warning lights (summer 2005); drive gear disengages-may or maynot engage after restarting car-but only for a minute; replace transmission (EEEK $4000- 4 shops-each said replace-no options Fall 2005); car will go again in Drive- but no other changes- feels the same and intermittent lights continue- wallet shy to bring it in to a shop; Brake light and Speedometer dial goes to zero are now also intermittent warning symptoms (winter 2006).
Recommendations: clean shift buttons; or-problem could be in ignition cylinder- if so, what part do I need to order (assuming I can remove it)?
What I think: it is all related & it did NOT need a new transmission. I think what ever is causing all the lights & speedometer dial to quit is not recognizing the transmission is in Park.
Should it be able to start while in Neutral, or only Park?
Please help, at least to get it started so I don't have to have it towed.
Thank you.

Does the steering wheel unlock when you go to position I?
If so remove the plastic covers on the steering coulmn. The top one pops off. The bottom one is held on with 3 t-25 screws. Once the covers are off then locate the electrical part of the ignition switch. On the other end of where the key goes in. The switch is held in by 2 straight screws. Remove the switch try using a screw driver to start it. Make sure the key is in the ignition.Or the Immoblizer won't let the car start.
For all the other issues I will be willing to bet the bad ABS module is causing all the problems.
There is many places that will rebuild them for like $100.00
If the key won't turn into all positions after the electrical part is removed you will need the lock cylinder Assembly.

Thanks so much for the information. I almost got it started with the screwdriver, hopefully next time. With the switch removed, the key won't turn any farther. Now, however, the clock stays lit even with the key out. Will I need to replace the key with the lock cylinder assembly?
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

1) Thanks again for your help.
2) I lost my dashboard lights (the "dimmable" lights), will they come back once I get the new Keyed Ignition lock assembly installed?
3) If it is okay to drive the car without the ABS control unit in while it is out for repair, based on all the problems/symptoms it seems to cause, I don't see the rush to put it back in. Does it have any effect on smog systems?
4) I can't seem to find a repair manual for this car. I've only found a Chilton's Import Cars 2000-2005 (or similar, I didn't look up the exact title).
5) How should I confirm the need to rebuild the ABS unit?
6) See #1 above

The electrical part might be going bad as well. see what happens. The headlight switch could be going out as well to.
I don't think the somg system will be affected but you might not have a speedometer.
Most manuals on your car are on DVD computer programs.
Get the codes pulled and cleared I bet the R/R sensor comes right back on.
