The 2005 V50 I just bought doesn't have the gas cap lanyard, so I'm forced to remember not to leave it behind at every gas stop... Nope, not gonna happen.

So I look at my options - $30+ for a new gas cap with a lanyard (ouch) or $8 for a lanyard for a 2006+ model. Being cheap, I opted for the latter, so of course, it doesn't fit. The circular part (that rides in the groove in the gas cap) is a mm or two too wide to fit in the groove.

So I took the "too fat" loop, and ground it down using my palm and my concrete driveway (I was going to use my orbital sander but left all my sandpaper at the shop). Worked like a charm, and in just a minute I'd knocked some thickness off...



Here's the result of my driveway grinder: Ugly, but in the "who really cares" sort of way...


Now the loop fits in the groove.


A standard panel pin from my spare parts pile was just the right size...


$30 saved in literally a few minutes, and a fully functional, non-forgettable gas cap is now permanently tied to my Volvo.
