I've also got a 2005 S40 T5 with almost the exact same issue. A couple of months ago when I started using the AC, it would work for about 2-3 minutes, then start blowing ambient air. I had to turn things off for a few minutes before it would do the same all over again.
Today I took it to a Midas for an AC diagnosis. They originally wanted to recharge the refrigerant which was low. So we did it. After R134a levels were perfect, they ran into another problem. They said that the compressor's clutch only intermittently engages, even when the AC system in maxed out. They want to replace the compressor - oddly enough they had 35 of the exact same compressor in stock, which makes me wonder if these have a habit of f'ing up.
Ive read a thread about shimming the clutch but still looking into this further. I've found the compressor - looks like its connected to the oil pan and has a pulley running from the alternator, and another which is the main drive belt. Still can't tell if the clutch is engaging or not because I cant visualize a shaft... Any ideas?

I just bought my '06 Volvo and has the same problem. Works fine for about 30 minutes, blows warm air for a few minutes, then back to cold. repeat.
I went by dealership to pick up a couple hoses and asked them about the above problem. Apparently, this is a common problem with the Volvo A/C clutches going bad and intermittently working. I found a couple of consumer complaints which requested a recall of the A/C clutch but no to avail. The Volvo dealer charges $800 for shimming the clutch, and $1500 to replace it.
I am hoping the extended warranty I purchased will cover the cost of the A/C clutch as this is not a "wear and tear" issue, more of a manufacturer and design failure.
Good Luck!

none of the symtom above sound like a/c compressor to me, if the a/c blow cold to warm then to cold again, i don't think it is the compressor problem. it sound to me more like a software or a electrical problems to me. if it is the compressor, it will blow cold to warm but not cold again (compressor cut out). but if it blow cold again, sounds more like a faulty ccm electrical problem. i suggest u get a proper scanner (vida) get the dtc first before more diagnosis process or spent any money on it
I followed instructions from this forum to reshim the compressor clutch. There was only one shim/washer in the clutch, and after removing it, we got the gap back into spec. Sure enough the problem is completely fixed and has been working without problem for 2 weeks now!
Have you tried searching the forum for the thread on shimming?

sure sounds like the classic clutch failure. Shim or replace should fix the issue. Goodluck!
