Default Cam locking tool

Are these used only for reinstalling the cams into lower head? What I mean is, are they readily used when dismantling the head from block as well? As there is no need for them to be in time when pulling the head. Make sense?

Just reassembly. And they are only really needed if you remove the cam gears (CVVT gear on the exhaust cam and plain gear on the intake cam). The reason is because the cam gears can be reinstalled in any position because there is no woodruff key or pin or any other mechanical means. You can mark the intake cam gear easily enough since it has 3 bolts and line up is straight forward. The kicker is the CVVT gear. It can freely move 360* during install. It must be correct within a few degrees or it will set an error code. Worst case involves piston to valve contact.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. The cam gear tool that I bought came with a cam cover tool for reinstalling the cam cover evenly. The cam cover is quite fragile and can break if you do not tighten it evenly. The first time I did this I made a tool out of spark plugs and all-thread rod which worked fine. The supplied cam cover tool saved time and was rather simple to use.

Thanks Hudini, Made me feel a little more comfortable about tackling this project. See some Ebay for a reasonable price.

Hudini, I didn't want to take my cam sprockets off. They are still on the Cams. The rears of my Cams do not have slots, how do I get the kit to work? My cams have something attached on the ends, no slot. Model year 2010 S40. Do you know if I'm suppose to take this end off held on by a Phillips screw? They're on both cams. Please advise. Thanks

Remove those to access the slots. But don't use a Phillips or you'll strip it out.

Hi ES6T, Is it counterclockwise to loosen? Seems very torqued. Lefty loosey? Just want make sure I'm not tightening rather than loosening. Appreciate all these answers, don't want to do this job twice.
