Default camshaft install positions

I'm loosing hope with this....had to remove the head meaning the camshafts came out...all the way with the sprockets removed....I had them acuratly marked for reinstall but somewhere the marks rubbed off....Now I have no clue how to installthem in the right position...we all know about the tool...this is the step before the tool seeing the cuts in back can be horizontal in a number of positions...the issue is where are the lobes pointing bedfore you put the tool on....you can have a situation where the lobes are pointing towards you on intake cam and away (180 deg) on the exhaust...but you can do this in two different ways...you can have it that way on cyl 1 or cyl 4...or there is a position which seems correct say cyl 1 where the intake lobes are towards you and also the exhaust pointing towards you...this seems to produce a sensable sequence when first you get an exhaust stroke followed imediatly by a downward intake stroke (this is with the crankshaft marks aligned with the mark on the block when all the pistons are at their bottom position)
so piston 1 goes up...exhaust... when it gets to the top and starts down you get an intake...this seems correct.....ANY CLUES about wherew to have the lobes pointing and which cylinder your looking at OH this is an s40 with 4 cyl 1'9 turbo

If you use the "tool" - you can bolt the cams to the "tool" before you install them - Then when the tool is on the cams are in the correct position. (i trust the crank is also) Lay the cams into the head (with a little bit of oil in the right places) and bolt the cam cover down ( using the appropriate sealer applied with a tiny roller) Then everything will be lined up!

Sorry I've never really paid attention to to where the lobes are - I just knew if the tool was not used - very bad things happened!
