Catalytic Converter - newbee
Hello all,
I have a 2003 Volvo S40 with 68K and recently the check engine light came on and off but mostly on (usually when fuel tank is low and on a cold day). I took it to a repair shop and they said that the catalytic converter is bad and would cost $1400 to replace. The car is in California.
How do I know for sure it is the cat and not something else? the car is running fine and gas mileage is normal. If it is the cat, do you know of a good after market branch that is California certified that you would recommend?
Thanks in advance!!!!

My 2003 S40 (171K miles) also needs a catalytic converter but it has needed it for about 30K. When I go to replace the front one I'll be changing the O2 sensors at the same time. Have you looked on eBay. The one at Magnaflow costs over $1000 but on eBay it's less than $300.
Hello tr_car_nut, is your check engine light go on and off currently? How do you know that you need to replace the front cat? any performance issues? Saw the Magnaflow in Amazon - great deal. Thanks
