Default CEL for Evap System -- Service Campaign?

My GF recently bought a 2000 S40, and it has been throwing a CEL about "EVAP leak" or similar. After ensuring the gas cap is screwed all the way in and clearing the code, it keeps coming back.

We took the car to an independent mechanic, and he inspected the EVAP system and didn't find any faults. He says that there is a "service campaign" from Volvo that would update the system or something so that this code doesn't recur.

My GF picked the car up, so I am a little hazy on the details of that last bit.

Can anyone provide any info on what he was talking about? I assumed it meant there was a recall and a Volvo dealer could update the ECU (or whatever computer part) but I can't seem to find any info on the Web.

Thanks

{edit: I think he was referring to TSB 23109, but I can't find a free source to see the full content of this bulletin.}

I would talk to the dealer about it. I think they need to hear that the ECU is concluding things that may not be happening.

Also, I'd check on what else may cause that code. I have a heater circuit low voltage code right now simply because my secondary o2 sensor needs to be replaced. The bad o2 shorts out that other circuit, causing a funky code.

I talked to the service guy at the dealer, and he says that a software update will recalibrate the range of acceptable EVAP pressures.

Apparently this would cost $200+ (!) and Volvo charges for the software update per se on top of the labor and diagnostic fees. Pretty tough to swallow.

I'm going to make sure the gas cap isn't the issue before taking it in. I'll try sealing with vaseline. Also I might call around and see if any indy mechanics have the gear to do the software update.

Unless you find a shop that has access to VIDA, you must go to a dealer. The new software updates the way the ECM interprets data received from the leak detection pump. This may or may not solve your problem, but its the first step in diagnosing an EVAP code.

There is no TSB for that.
Volvo calls them TNN's.Tech net notes. But this isnt a TNN.Its a service Campaign.
Service Campaign 109.
It has come to our attention that
certain model year 2000 and 2001 vehicles have experienced an unusual number of dashboard “check
engine” light illuminations.
Volvo has determined that a software upgrade will alleviate unnecessary “Check engine” lights without affecting
the system’s diagnostic capabilities. In
some cases, a new valve will be replaced.
Valve kit part number.
30630251.
$40.61
