So I purchased a 2000 S40 about a year ago with 198k and I have noticed that the check engine light comes on for about 3-5 minutes after startup, then doesn't come back on until I restart the car. At first I wrote it off as a dirty O2 sensor, but I can bring it up to temp, kill it, then restart and have the light stay on for another 3-5 minutes, so that seems unlikely. Acceleration is sluggish until the light goes out, however the engine revs and idles normally. I'm thinking the two issues must be related, maybe even a transmission or trac control problem? I've also recently noticed an intermittent grinding/dragging sound from the passenger side of the motor, only upon acceleration and lasting just a few seconds at a time. Doesn't seem to be any correlation between this and engine temp, but it does happen mostly (not exclusively) after a startup or a full stop. Ruled out the VVT solenoid and all the turbo connections are solid and free from damage. Nothing that seriously affects driveability, but I'd like to get to the bottom of it before that changes. Also, this is my first post here, but I've searched the forum several times now and I have to say you guys are awesome! With the price of import labor these days this place is a blessing! Can you get a code reader on the car? Whatever error code is causing the check engine light should be present when you first turn on the key to read the codes.

 

are you sure you are not seeing the service reminder indicator light? that would come on with the key and stay on for a few minutes. Good news is there's a simple procedure to reset using the odometer button...

Step 1. Hold down the odometer button

Step 2. Turn on the ignition so all the lights on the dash come on

Step 3. Keep holding the odometer button down for 30 secondss or until the service light starts flashing

Step 4. Release the odometer button

that's it.

 

Sorry for the slow reply. Seems I may have jinxed myself. I'm fairly certain I have a tensioner pulley issue. The noise had become worse over the last two days, but thismorning after a short drive around the block the car failed to restart for me. Now I'm just weighing scenarios since I know the FPR was in bad shape, and then there's the fact that the vvt pulley is most likely being affected by the tensioner chatter- makes me wonder if the cps hasn't thrown a code as a result and cut fuel/spark. Needless to say I've got some wrenching and testing to do, but I appreciate the feedback I've gotten so far. I'll update once I get everything figured out.

 

It's not leaking oil is it? Check the timing belt to make sure it's dry. If it's covered in oil then check the compression.

 

I have just taken my 2005 s40 to a mechanic I also thought it was the o2 sensor it's not it's the PCV hose.
