Thank-you. Do you know what exactly the "cam position timing over retarded" is.

Thanx again

It usually means either timing jumped,Someone did the timing belt and has it off,Or the shutoff valve on the top of the cam cover isn't working correctly.

The p0128 code is related to your thermostat. I would probably suggest changing the coolant temp sensor as well as the thermostat or else your car can start acting up more and more.

Check your oil level ASAP - I believe the "cam position sensor" can also come up when the oil level is especially low. I had a similiar error code and I ended up havingan oil leak that I hadn't noticed.

Tech, I have the same code p0015. I bought new camshaft reset valve from dealer, installed it and same code comes back after 50-60 miles. Car starts fine and drives very good, I am having hard time believing timing is off. Timing belt was done 3k ago. What do you think?

Did the code start coming up just after the belt was replaced?

Maybe the VVT pulley is bad or there is sludge in the head.

Tech,

I've replaced vvt pulley also, it was fine for couple of days and now i have CEL again and code is p0013 which reads : Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 1). Is it not recognizing something or...? If it's the sludge problem what is your advice, how to clean it right? thanks!

Sludge might be the problem. Also on an older S70 I kept getting similiar code and after messing with everything found out it was a bad Cam position sensor.

Ok, thanks. Is there a good oil additive to help with sludge (one of those add and drive for few minutes then do the oil change) or things need to be removed and cleaned properly?

They have some that say engine flush that you add to the oil and drain after so long look for one of those.

Just note that with the majority of these engine flush aditives you cannot drive with them in the engine.. Normally you add them to the oil, let the engine revving in low RPM with the car parked and then drain the oil..

Here I am. Nothing good to report. [:@]I did 2 flushes in last 4 days, 2 gunk additives, 10 quarts of synthetic oil, 2 oil filters. No changes, car still runs great and CEL is still on.

Tech, I took the camshaft reset valve apart just to see what is inside. How is this thing picking up a signal? Oil or steam from the engine? Or maybeposition of vvt pulley?

I believe it uses the cam sensor to active the solenoid to move the VVT for the timing.

Tech, we took vvt pulley out again and replaced it with new one, now timing is way off, car doesnt start. I assume everything including cam has moved from it's marks because vvt was under load. Where is the best place to start now? Also, could we damage the engine by trying to start it when everything is off its marks?
It's 2003 volvo s40.[sm=oopssign.gif]

Yes it if was off more than 3 teeth most likely you bent valves.
You will need to either buy or make a cam lock tool to hold the rear of the cams in place.
Then you will need to set the pulley back up and try and see how bad the damage is. The car might not even start after setting it all back up.

I wish I had known you were going to do that. When the belt comes off the VVT pulley is supposed to lock into position and not move freely unless the cam is spinning. If it doesn't lock right away you give it a slight tap to make it lock.
But also the cams are supposed to be locked before removing any of the pulleys anyway. I was trying to find a picture of the tool but cannot seem to find one.
Edit here is one the tool with the red arrow pointing to it is the cam lock tool.
