Default Crank not fully turning (belt is off) 2001 S40t VVT

I have a 2001 1.9 T S40 VVT
I've replace the headgasket and am now rebuilding. I was attempting to turn the crank to find the mark (I didn't mark it before teardown.) The crank only goes so far in either direction before coming to a stop. I haven't put the belt on yet.
Thanks.

You should not be turning the crankshaft without the belt on. There is probably a piston hitting an open valve, I am not sure the best way to get the cam and crank in synch/time since you did not do it before taking it apart or before putting the head back on, I don't know enough about these engines to know if you can remove the cam or somehow get all the valves closed so that you can rotate the crank without doing damage to get it to the timing mark, it may be that you need to remove the head...

You could remove the valve cover allowing the valves to close and for you to align the crank and cams, leaving the new head gasket intact.
