Default Driving a 2001 Volvo S40 from Michigan to Nevada and back. What would you replace?

Hello!!
I'm driving my 2001 Volvo S40 from Michigan to Nevada and back at end of August and wanted some long term S40 owners opinion.
I bought this car cheap from a friend in non-running condition with 98000 miles. I think the car has been overheated a few times and it was worked on by a shady mechanic that cut alot of corners and never managed to fix the overheating condition and did a horrible head gasket job.

I have narrowed down the non-start condition to the ignition wiring harness. Replaced it and started up and ran strong.

Overheating condition was narrowed down to ripped up wires on the radiator fan. Installed new fan and overheating stopped. Also, flushed the coolant out with water couple of times since it seemed like they did a bad mix of different coolants (Orange goo).

The engine was still burning coolant and I'm working on doing a head gasket job right now. While I have the engine apart, I would like to replace some of the common failure items to make it through this trip without any problems (I do not want to get stranded in middle of Nevada desert). Here are my list so far.

-Head Valve Seals
-Timing Belt, Timing Belt Tensioner
-Water Pump
-Oil Trap
-Coolant Overflow Tank Cap
-Lower Radiator Hose
-All new brake pads, Brake Fluid
-Transmission Fluid

What do you guys think? Is there anything else I might want to add to the list?

Check proper tire pressure and top off the R134a for the A/C and I think you've covered it. It's going to be hot in Vegas.

What do the cam and crankshaft seals look like.
Might save another stripdown later if any leaking seal is imminent in the near future.

Well, the cams are out and if the car overheated, I would replace them, that's a no brainer.

As for the rest, I really don't know what to tell you. I would probably leave the car and take a rental. I don't think I would drive a car across the country that I didn't trust. I'd have to put 500 local miles on it before I'd try to push it across the country.

At that age, if you are replacing things, replace all of the coolant hoses. Run the heat and if you smell any coolant, replace the heater core. Check the motor mounts and replace any that are torn.

Have the battery tested and as mentioned the tires. I always tell people that a car does NOT know how far it is being driven. If it will drive 50 miles it will go 500 or 5000. I have picked up 2 850's that were over 1500 miles away and turned the key and drove them home. No timing belt or anything. You just need to know that it will not overheat, that is not an easy fix.

I just took my 850 T5 on a 4,500 mile road trip, 16 days. It ran like a top, no issues. I change the oil when I got back and I'm about to take another road tip to the tune of either 1,900 or 2,500 miles. Not sure if I will go to Pittsburgh or not. The first leg I will likely tow a 1,300 lb trailer (650 miles). These cars will run when well maintained.

What motor is in the car?

Yeah, I'm gonna replace all the cam seals since they come with the head gasket kit.

How hard is it to get to the crankshaft seal? I'm not sure how to get it out.

Thanks for all the advice. Yeah, almost forgot about tires. The car has been sitting for a while so I should get those replaced. I'm trying to get this car running soon so I can drive it as a commuter and make some small weekend trips with it to test everything out.

The car has 1.9T engine.

So, I got my head gasket set and I'm about to start putting everything back together.

But I'm confused about these silver rectangle gaskets with 2 holes in them.

It seems like an exhaust gasket but I can't figure out where its going. Can anyone help me?
Also, is there 2 different intake manifold gaskets in this kit? This is confusing me.

The exhaust gaskets go between the exhaust manifold and the head. If you left the exhaust manifold in the car it makes it a bit challenging to get them in place due to the limited working space.

There are extra gaskets in the kit. I just replaced what came out with it's new counterpart. Don't forget to seal the cam cover with RTV. It will leak otherwise.
