Thermostat change...
I'm an idiot, is this what i need to remove to change the thermostat as well as the Coolant sensor? It's darn cold out and the more I know before I begin the better. Also anyone know what size torque head i'll need to remove this so I can hit AutoZone to get it? Is the pic I took correct? Once I remove this black screw and the one caddy corner to it is that all? Any help is appreciated...again...I'm an idiot!

Yes thats what you need to remove. Sorry I forget exactly the size but it is either a T40 or T45(I have a special socket I just grab so I don't remember the size) If you can try to find a long bit one it will help alot.
Once the screws are removed the top will just come off. Then the sensor will be pretty easy to remove with a 19MM wrench.

Hi I changed my themostat recently, note my Volvo S40 is phase 2, so things might be slightly diffrent for yours.
I would just get a set of torque bits (set I have here has 7 sizes upto T45), as you could do with a smaller sizes (T20 or T25) for removing covers to get to the bolt at the back of the themostat housing, as I found I had to remove the top left cover. You can see one of the clips for this cover in the top left of your picture, this cover is also held on with 2 torq bolts from the top of the engine block.
Also I would make more space by allowing the cable that runs over the top of the themostat hosing to be moved. To do this you can remove the cover over the fuel-rail and injectors (the end of this cover is in the top right of your picture). Now unplug the 2 far left injectors and its posible to move the cable around. I ended up doing this as I could not get the housing over the top of the themostat without pushing up hard on the cable, and was worried I was going to break it.
Another tip if your changing the coolant sensor, I could not get mines out with a spanner, so I just cut the cable at the sensor end and slipped over a socket set piece.

Guys, I just wanted to send a HUGE thank you to you both. I finally sucked it up went out there in the 30 degree weather and just did it. it was way more sinple then i thought it would be. took me all of 30 minutes to change the thermostat and the sensor. mechanic wanted 200 just for sensor, so with parts you guys saved me 150! thanks again. My confidence has shot up lot by just doing it. This site is invaluable!
I didn't lose very much coolant so i'm not worried about that, but i had some gasket sealant that i didn't use for the thermostat. is this something I NEED to go back and do? i ran the car for a while and didn't see any leaks, so i think the gasket is holding fine.

I use this procedure..
40/V40 SERIES SERVICE LIGHT RESET
RESETTING SERVICE LAMP ON 1999 S40/V40
1, Hold down the odometer button
2, Turn the ignition so all the lights come on
3, Keep holding the odometer down for 30 secs or until the service light starts flashing
4, Release the odometer button
ive just done my 2001 s40 no problem release button as soon as the service light flashes....

yeah i called AZ and they told me it was illegal for them to clear engine lights! I thought they were nuts, but they persisted. Oh well, I will just stop by AZ every now and then and have them check to see if something else popped up. Thanks again Tech.
how is it the same thing, I'm not trying to get in an argument, but I know my car! the check engine light and the service light are two differant things. Thanks anyways
you're right jrgillespie630it's not the same thing. service light is exactly what it is service light, time to get car serviced. . check engine light is the light with the little engine meaning that there is a problem.
I've used the same procedure to get rid of my service light and my engine light. It's called unplug your battery, but make sure you have your code for your radio for when you connect your battery back again.
I was going to try this MC, and as I'm driving down the highway this morning I look down and boom! no engine light! It just cleared itself, I don't know... just like that. So maybe they can clear themselves after a while.

ah, well knowing it will probably come back sucks! But at least my dashboard will look a little less crowded for a while. Thanks again
