hey guys,

I m debating whether to rebuilt previously removed seized old engine .. engine with transmission were removed a while back ! just never had the time to work on this project ,, house projects , job or the Jag stype which i finally and gladly got rid of.. everything has been sitting in the garage for a while now.
I like to get the car going for my son which i now he needs it .. he is willing to help too .. I m thinking about just buying a used engine either from dallascraigslist or Ebay think much faster to get the car going - and IF I do this:
million dollar question : what is the suggested or recommended way of getting the good engine in there over the top or lifting the car ? i had help getting the old engine out from the top , jesus that was a job..
this has been my first time engine replacement project

any recommendations suggestions greatly appretiate it ..

2007 non turbo 2.4 ,, like i said old engine and transmission have been removed through the button, i saw a youtube video yesterday front end on car was removed for the swap

 

On most modern cars (15 years or less) removing engines is not easy especially if its your first , I have removed a few in my younger days but that was 40 years ago! would not do it now on these cars as their is no space so one has to take a lot of other parts off first
I am no expert on Volvo only have owner 2 but changing to a different engine may cause all sort of problems rather change with the same , as going for say the turbo T5 one the ECU may not work with the rest of the car but not sure
I think you have to remove the front end to install it
Is this a project to do with your son then yes , financially probably cheaper to get another car that is running .

I'm a hard-core DIY kinda guy, but given the cost of pretty nice examples of the S40, it's hard to imagine being a worthwhile effort. By the time you buy the engine (and tranny?) and have it shipped, and then discover all the myriad of details that have to be sorted, and THEN possibly discover that there was a fatal flaw with the engine you bought... you're money (and time!) ahead just selling the old car for scrap and finding a "new" one.

Just for giggles, here's the first ad that popped up on the Phoenix, AX-area craigslist page for a used S40. Hard to imagine coming out ahead fixing the old one in comparison to the chump change this one is going for...

And I bought a VERY clean 2005 V50 2.4i with 130,000 miles that only needed a few minor fixes for $2800 a few years ago. I sold it to a buddy, and it's still going strong.

 

i understand ! i wish i had never bought this car from the auction - knew there was an issue just had no idea it was a bad engine -- now I m stuck with the car without engine what do I do with it ?? I guess to spend 1600 on a used engine as oppose to 4500 for a new car big difference ..

i found an engine on ebay for 800 plus shipping (200 at least ) 84k miles so they say !! - seller is trying to find out whats gonna take to get it to Plano dfw texas ..
