I am trying to understand what i need to get to put my bike on the roof of my car ..

there is bike racks, cross bars, and then the bars that go parallel to the car ...

i mean, there is so many different names and stuff, and sometimes online it says, this is what you need to put your bike on the roof but it doesnt say anything else,

so im just kinda lost on what i need ...

You need Volvo load bars (just use that search term)
Try myswedishparts.com

and you also need a bike holder. Can be Volvo OEM or Thule makes good ones too.

Default What you need

If you have an S-40 without roof rails, e.g. a normal S40 sedan, then you need a set of aero feet, a "fit kit", a set of cross bars, and one or more bike carrier kits. Thule and Yakima both make great racks with custom fit-kits for the S-40. Thule, being Swedish, is well integrated to Volvo as you would expect.

Both of these rack manufactures maintain web sites where you select the omponents desired. They can be found at

http://www.thule.com/en/US/FitGuide.aspx

http://yakima.com/

Both companies make excellent products that are equal to or better than the OEM offerings. They also offer a considerably wider range of attachment devices once you have the base racks.

Expect to pay about $500 for the total setup unless you can find the parts used on eBay or the like. The bike carriers and attachments are easy to find there, the car specific fit kits much less so. REI occasionally puts these on sale for around 20% off list.

On the other hand, once you have the various components, you customize for future vehicles by just changing the fit and/or foot kit - everthing else is universal. The feet, bars, carriers, etc.. will literally last a lifetime.

Volvo, like many euro cars, expects that you will at times put a rack on the roof. As such, they put an indicators for the mounting location. These can be found by opening the doors and looking on the underside of the roof panel just inside where the rubber sealing strip from the door contacts the roof. Make sure you get the locks so that your rack stays mounted to your car and doesn't disappear in the middle of the night or while you're off riding somewhere.

Here is a message I posted on another Volvo forum... I'm trying to get as much input as I possibly can. I read here that Thule is a good match for Volvo so I suppose that I could go for Thule equipment as well. I'm just looking for the best and most secure way to connect a bike and kayak carrier to my Volvo S40 T5 (2005).

Thanks guys:

Since it's springtime and I'm purchasing a new bike (and possibly a fishing kayak) I need to invest in a rack - I found this thread, I'm glad I did. After reading everything I'm now leaning towards the OEM load bars but I'd still like to get two Yakima "High Rollers" (for bikes) and also the Kayak Stacker and the fairing as well.

Does anyone know if the Yakima products will attach to the Volvo OEM load bars? If I want the Yakima products would I need to get the Yakima Q-towers and rails? They sure don't look as nice as the OEM equipment.

Could I get the Volvo rails and then buy the Yakima Crossbars and other equipment?'

Thanks!

Default 2000-2004 OEM S40 Load Carriers found...

I was searching today and just found a dealer with a cache of the OEM load carrier kits that screw into the roof holes in the rain channel for the 00-04 S40. They're $175 and that includes free shipping. What's great is they're rated for 220lbs, twice what the aftermarket clamp models generally claim.

I emailed the manager and he confirmed they are the real deal, are in stock and ship free.

Ordered mine, get yours...
