Default Faiiing Doorlock

On my Volvo s40 which I think is a nice car the driver's side door lock has a problem. It will not lock.

When I out the key in and point it straight up and then turn it clockwise the door lock goes down. But then I have to get the key out and that is where it fouls up. The key now is in the 3 o'clock position and then I turn it counter clockwise the lock goes back up. The car is now unlocked.

if I turn the key clockwise again, the lock goes back down and if I then turn counter clockwise the lock goes back up.There is no way that i can get the key out without unlocking the door.

Clearly, that is not what I want.

Is something like this repairable and if not what is the driver's side door lock called so I can buy another one?

Any help appreciated. Thanks i advance.

Respectfully,

Default Faulty doorlock

I need an answer to this question. I am stuck with a repaired car, with a faulty door lock. Can it be replaced or is it easier to repair it? I am unsure. On so many things now no one repairs - they only replace.

That is my question.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It needs to be replaced. I did the passenger side a couple of weeks ago. They are specific to each door position. Its not worth cracking open and trying to repair. Mine would not go up or down so I bought a used actuator on ebay for 30 bucks. Watch this video first...its not hard but getting the actuator part in is like a Chinese puzzle

I saw online a generic door lock actuator for a lot less than even a used one from Volvo.

Would this be acceptable. It would save a lot of money. It is for a 2002 Volvo s40.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

I would double check part numbers first. 2004.5 and up is a different car than 2002.

We want to take our summer vacation soon and it looks like we will not get that door lock replaced in time. Is there any workaround for this? We want to go as soon as possible, but we really are apprehensive about gong out of town in a car that one cannot lock the door.

This is the only door lock. There are no other door lock on any of the three other doors. There is a trunk lock though, maybe that will work - maybe. Is there a way to lock a 2002 Volvo s40 car through the trunk easily?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Why can't you just press the lock botton on the door before you close it? In that case, no need to use the key except to unlock.
