fault code 0700 and 0720 stumped!!!
good day all,
my 2002 volvo s40 has only 107k miles at around 80K miles the check engine and flashing up light activated and when i read the code it stated 0700 and i changed the "gear position sensor " and the code disappeared for about 10 months (oem volvo part)
today still driving perfect the code pops up 0700 and 0720 output sensor i dont know if i should replace both or the speed sensor clear this first and see if this trips the code again. From what i recall when researching for the 0700 code it was most likely some electrical sensor or electronic issue not within in spec reporting back to the TCM as oppose to internal damaged
I can not find the correct output sensor several vendors listed it differently by name and part number even by different numbers on the trans schematic page either 21 or 29
Can i continue to drive till i find and install the correct sensors?? and where the heck does someone find the correct transmission fluid ???lol

I'd start by cleaning the connector contacts to the TCM. Not an uncommon issue for S40s. The P0720 code is pointing at the output speed sensor. If its intermittant, I'd also check /clean its connector before opting to replace.
The correct transmission fluid is specific to your transmission model and the volvo part# should be listed in the owners manul. Assuming you have the 5 speed auto, its an Aisin AW55-50 so you can google that for fluid type. I believe it calls for JWS3309 (but best to check). BTW, Toyotas also use this unit so you can buy Toyota OEM fluid for cheap as well.

Thank you for the reply ill start by cleaning out those connectors that lead to the TCM ill search for its location hopefully its not buried somewhere unreachable.
The sensor according to different diagrams is located at two places and i believe some manuals actually label one of the as a crank sensor but at volvo specific dealer ship diagrams there are 2 locations numbered 21 and 29
but most vendors only carry one version as oppose to both of them so i am would be looking for the output sensor not the one some shop manuals list as vehicle speed sensor (which display car speed and transmission rpm shift points by reading at the description of the sensor in the shop manuals )
the gear selection sensor which i replace 10 months cleared the last codes is it possible that it may be out of alignment ? ( its volvo oem replacement also)

One thing you can do is browse a dealer web store (Tascaparts.com is who I use) to search for OEM part numbers and fitment. that should give you diagrams and part numbers that you can use while shopping for a replacement part. Having access to VIDA would also be useful for finding parts and diagrams :-)
