Front strut/spring swap out
Has anybody attempted to replace their struts in the 2008 S40? I ordered the set of two, complete with springs, boot, etc. figured it’d be easy considering I replaced my CV axles earlier this year, and has, in fact, replaced the entire suspension on my wife’s SLK too. No such luck. I am completely stumped on how to even get the old one out. Any tips wil be greatly appreciated.
what kind of bottom end does your model year have - the two bolts holding the bottom of the strut to the knuckle or the design where the bottom slides in? You should be able to find a video on Youtube for both styles - look for both S40 and S60 car models to see.
Mine appears to be just encased in the knuckle with no visible way to remove it. I did try the YouTube thing, with no success. Same in Volvo forums, which is surprising. On YouTube it’s mostly just vids of the earlier models’ strut replacements. Where I did find a couple of videos addressing my model they never did get to the part about showing how to remove it. Surely this must have been addressed somewhere?

I just looked at the 2008 strut and it looks exactly like my 2005. 3 nuts on top holding the assembly to the strut tower and 2 big bolts pinching the bottom to the front hub assembly. It should be straight forward. Do you have a picture of yours?
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I ended up sending the struts back. The noise I was hearing apparently came from the brakes. I had ordered brake pads to change them out since I was going to do the strut swap. I got frustrated when I wasn’t able to free the struts and figured I’d reinstall everything and re group. Turns out the struts are fine.
