I have a 2001 V40 with 60k miles on it. When the weather is cold & I go over a bump, I hear a squeak from the front end.

On another car, this was caused by the front sway bar squeaking in it's mounts. I solved the problem on that car by releasing the bar from its rubber mounts, applying a liberal amount of silicone grease to the bar & rubber & replacing the mounts.

Might this be a similar condition on the Volvo?

 

Could be that also could be warn upper spring seats, but I'd try your idea first considering that it be a pain to replace the spring seats.
