fuel gauge and cam sensor
I have three things on a 2000 S40: 1st, thanks for the help on code 0128. I changed the thermostat and temp sensor and code hasn't come back since.
2nd: Is the fuel gauge directly wired from the sending unit, or does it run through the ECM? When filled up. it reads right at the full mark (16 gal). When at the empty red line, I still have 5 gallons in the tank. So, is it a direct failure, or is it calibrated though the computer? Me changing the tank sending unit vs. the dealer recalibrating? Or is there an adjustment somewhere else?
3rd: What does the camshaft position sensor do and when does it do it? The reason I'm asking, it seems when I start the car without waiting for the 'bells' to stop, it throws the 0014 and 0015 code, which is the cam sensor I believe. When I wait for the chimes to stop and then start the car, it doesn't give a code. Maybe it is my imagination, but that seems to be the case. The car starts fine, I was just wondering if the sensor is for startup timing only or what. Unless you tell me otherwise, I will wait to change the sensor, $150.00, until I really need to.
Thanks for the help.

The cam sensor helps with start up but also controls the VVT system. You might want to think about replacing it.
The Fuel gauge used to be able to be calibrated but not sure anymore. You will have to check with the Dealer on that one.

From my own experience which is the same, and all the posts on all the forums I've read asking the same thing, I can only surmise that Volvo NEVER wants you to run out of gas.
When I'm on empty and the light comes on, I go to fill up and it will only take 12 gallons.

Does anyone have a picture on where the cam sensor is located on a 2000 S40 1.9T engine. The code went away with 2 oil changes, but now it is coming back on quite frequently. I want to clean it and possibly replace it. Thanks in advance.
Thanks, tech. You know, that's where I figured. You would figure, camshaft sensor would be near the camshafts. But darn if I can find something bolted to the outside of the head with 2 screws, like the part picture shows, with a wire lead coming out of it. I will look again tonight.
Also, what are your thoughts on buying the subscription to Advance Auto's tech site? I forget the name right now. I know the station I take it to for state inspection uses it. And it claims to have step by step pictures and instructions. Are you familiar with this? It sounds like it may be worth it. $25 for 1 vehicle for 1 year.

From another forum it appears that it's simply the float in the tank. By bending it you can recalibrate your gauge to read more accurately.
