Hi, first issue ever with my 06 S40, driving home with my kids last night. Had to pull over to get my daughter back in her seatbelt. Stopped the car, put in park and shut it off, went around to rebuckle her and back into the drivers seat. Within those 2 minutes I restarted my car just fine but 3 lights were lite up on the drive shift and wouldn’t allow me to get it out of park. Tried waiting and restarting but kept doing the same thing. I know I need brake fluid added which I have but just purchased so haven’t put in in yet. So I left my car sitting and walked home with my kids. Need to go back now and get the car but need help invade it is still having the same problem.

In general, when a running car won't come out of park, it's because the brake lights didn't come on. After the notorious Audi 5000 unintended acceleration cases in the 1980's, all manufacturers fitted these interlocks to everything, because it's cheaper than being sued en mass by idiots that can't drive, which the Audi 5000 owners all turned out to be.

On volvos, though, they tend to include an interlock override just for that. Do you see such a shifter interlock?

You do need to learn to read the information presented to you, I must say. I wouldn't dare come into a public forum and post "some warning lights came on, what should I do?" I mean, have some pity on us, there, Nebuchadnezzar.

 

100% no one can help if you do not state the warning lights as it could be a lot of things , I drive a manual Volvo , but on my 4X4 Pajero which is auto its only the ignition switch that controls it . As the volvo is an electronic key could the the switch ? I cant imagine someone programming a default for lights to stop one driving , as what happens if only one fails? I like manual cars
