Default Help! ECM60 and ECM91

I have an ongoing CEL problem with my 2004 Volvo s40. I have had camshaft reset valve and fuel pressure regulator replaced recently. The car ran excellent afterwards with lots of power (previously had lack of power and weird oil/fuel smell. The issue has since returned after a month of running great. I'm due for a smog inspection in a few months and need CEL to go off. The S40 has about 180,000 miles on it.

I know that there is a known sludge problem in the S40 camshaft reset valve. Is it possible that the part in my car is defective and needs to be replaced again? I believe an aftermarket part was used by mechanic. I welcome any feedback.

There is another possibility. The CVVT gear itself. The code 60 will light up when the requested cam position does not equal the actual. Usually it is the camshaft reset valve as you found out before.

I would clean the cam reset valve first. Then I would make sure the CVVT gear is not leaking onto the timing belt.

Did you get a warranty on the cam reset valve?

That's a good question. I'll need to ask the mechanic. Is a Ccvt gear replacement expensive?

It's a little more involved than the camshaft reset valve. The cost of the gear is similar but the labor will be more. Also, you need a cam locking tool to keep the cam from moving from the reference position.

Check on the warranty for the reset valve too.
