Hub Removal Help Please!!!
I'm trying to remove the front wheel hubs on a 2007 S40 (mfr date 12/06). The car has some rust but not a more than average. I've tried a little heat, some Liquid Wrench, and I'm using the EverTough hub removal from O'Reilly's. I've used an impact wrench rated for 350 Ft Lbs and it won't budge. In fact, it's bent one of the horse shoe spacers the press uses. I've seen videos made using this press and I've used the instructions on the box so I'm guessing it's just rusted on. Is it possible to break the hub housing in this situation? I'm worried about that and wondering whether I'll ever get this apart. I even looked at the 12 ton press at Harbor Freight which might be my next option. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Also, on one wheel, I wasn't even able to get the rotor off. It seems to be rusted onto the hub/wheel assembly.I was reading about oven at 350 for 30 min but worried the ABS sensor would be messed up.

If I'm reading your post correctly, you're trying to press out the bearing from the knuckle. I've been reading up on that since I've got a noisy bearing myself (though not bad enough that I've taken the time to do it yet). Yes, you should be able to get that bearing out of the knuckle without TOO much trouble. Rust is your enemy - I'm with you in thinking that rust is the problem. I'd suggest just spraying the interface on both sides (one side blindly) with penetrating oil for a couple days. It wouldn't hurt to smack the hub with a hammer a couple times during the process either. The only other thing to try would be to heat the knuckle with a torch - not to glowing red, but getting it noticeably hotter than the bearing, and maybe even hitting the bearing with a can of aerosol duster upside down (which is REALLY cold) might help give you a thermal advantage.

If it's off the car use a hydraulic press. I have the 20 ton HF version and it pressed out and in the wheel bearing hubs on my 2005 S40 without a problem. You will need some scrap wood to position the knuckle perpendicular to the press.

I have heard that those hubs are especially stubborn even with a large slide hammer. Do yourself a favour, just take the whole spindle off and bring the replacement hub and spindle to the dealership for replacement. I did this and they charged me $30. The hub design is such that it should not be pressed back in using the usual methods. You need a special too to avoid putting pressure on the bearing itself.
I thought I had replied again here but must not have hit the button to reply? Anyway, the auto machine shop nearby pressed the bearings for me. The tech said it required 10 tons of force on removal. Also, he had to drill and tap for one of the ABS sensor retaining screws that broke off. The whole thing cost me 110 bucks while a local dealer wanted to charge at least twice that. Also, I removed the caliper component with the slide pins attached for repainting and have left the main caliper body attached to the brake lines. I'm wondering whether these are interchangeable or not. They look symmetrical to me so I'm guessing they are.
