Intake or Exhaust?
I have an 05 S40 2.4i and I want to increase hp, would you recommend installing an aftermarket cold air intake or buying an aftermarket exhaust kit? Intakes run around 300 and Exhaust are about 700. Let me know what you guys think
I recently installed the k&n cold air and full catback exhaust on a friends 05 S40 and it ran great except fuel economy went to the ****ters. Took it to a dyno and got a proper map on it and all was good. After about 40k of driving however it began to have multiple problems with fuel pressure and cvvt probelms. Does it sound awesome and haul ***.....you bet it does.....worth the headaches......not so much, imo that is
K&N makes a short ram intake for the 2.4i, not an actual cold air intake last time I checked. You'd probably be better off making your own, that's what I plan on doing. K&N wants almost $300 for a short ram which is crazy.
EuroSportTuning.ca has a really nice cat-back exhaust system for $675 or so. It's mounts real easy and goes to a dual output.
ElevateCars.com also has a similar cat-back system but it's more expensive.

Well i cheated a bit, i got a Spectre filter from a friend, so that's like 20-30, keep in mind i have a 01 s40, and then i got the bottom part of my air box that ran into the side bumper and ran a pipe(Bendy) through the current pipe(Hard plastic) and pushed it to my blinker, long story but my father took my car to pep boys once and they broke the mounts on my blinker so there is about a space this big "l l" and then i attached a little scoop thingy i found in garage. Not much difference, other than the noise is awesome.
On another note though, my idle went from 800ish to 590 and i get check engine lights for misfires, but i don't think that these two events were related and that my car is just acting up.

Oh and for the noise, i meant the recirculating valve, for your N/A it'll make the engine a bit louder and more throaty. I've heard that cone filters that are not pressurized can make your lower end pick up a bit bad, and that panel filters work better. But it all depends where the filter is i guess.
Since i have turbo i can't really have a CAI.

Right. I have the 2.4i so I need the cold air. I'm routing mine down in the drivers side behind the bumper since I got my own tubing. All I could find for sale were short ram and I don't want that at all. Plus I enjoy doing my own work when I can.
I'm not sure if there is a difference since it just comes straight out by only a few inches. You'll definitely see a performance increase at least due to the fact that the engine would be getting more free-flowing air, but it's still going to be hot air.
I'll take a lot of pictures when I build my CAI (should be the end of this week) and make a tutorial if you wanna wait till then.

And honestly it might make 6-8hp difference if you keep your car up to spec and always tuned, I.E a weekend car. But say daily drive, not so much. And intakes don't make a difference really until you get an exhaust system to match, then they'll let the car make more top end power.
Also to make sure you get the best you can, you should probably heat wrap your exhaust manifold since most intakes for 2.4's run in front of them, also i think i just got an email saying that Eurosport came out with a 2.4's intake.
