Moniter Not Ready/Can't Pass CA. Smog
Hey everyone. I received a 2000 S40 1.9T from my cousin. She recently had a new battery put in so all the monitors had to be reset and CA. smog won't pass the car if any of the monitors are not ready. I've been driving it for 3 weeks now and also drove it according to the driving cycle I found online. Every monitor is on now except the CAT. For the past 3 weeks, I drove it everywhere in the city and also a couple of hundred miles on the freeway and the CAT still is not ready. I talked to a mechanic and he said that the Volvo is one of the hardest cars to pass because of the monitors and on some years the cars don't need every monitor on but my year doesn't qualify. What should I do to have the CAT monitor be ready? Should I try the driving cycle a couple of more times or drive on the freeway to get it nice and hot so maybe the CAT monitor will be ready? Thanks in advance, Ed.

On my scanner, all the monitors (evap, O2 etc. have a green check next to them. Only the CAT shows a red symbol showing it is not ready. When I first got the car, a new battery was installed so every monitor had the red symbol next to it which means it wasn't ready. Now everything is on but the CAT.

Different scanner than I have ever used I guess.
Look at the live data and see what the o2 sensors are doing. Look at upstream and downstream data and post it up. If the o2 sensors are reading right, then the cat is fine. If the downstream is reading nothing pretty much, there could be a problem with the cat.

Do you have any codes stored in the ECU? There's a lot written up on the ECU retraining cycles but most of that is for the older 850s/V70s with the Motronic systems. I'd say after 3 weeks you're not going to see anything else change so you should consider a few things: 1) check for any stored codes and clear 2) look at live data if your sensor allows 3) redo the retrain process by disconnecting the battery cables, shorting the cables together for a minute or two to remove any residual charge, 4) reconnect and drive the car in a normal city loop staying off full throttle/full boost and rescan after 50 or 75 miles. Note that if your live data shows all is normal, you may need a dealer/volvo shop with a VIDA/DICE tool to retrain per the factory manual as you may have a compatibility issue with your OBD2 reader. Also, you can also look into the California Referee program on how to get past what is an ODB2 issue - visit asktheref.org or call (800) 622-7733.

Thanks everyone. I decide to do a couple of drive cycles again and maybe because I was able to follow the drive cycle's instructions better because of the lighter holiday traffic. At the end of the second drive cycle, scanner showed the CAT monitor ready. I took it to smog, 15 minute later and it passed. Thanks everyone and Happy New Year!!!
