Most affordable way to replace a bad S40 engine
Good news: Finally the engine is installed by a master mechanic that teaches for the largest Toyota dealership in Florida. hehehe... Car is running great, now at the body shop getting two doors and hood sprayed. After that I gots me a beauty..
Bad news? My wife took my V70 and doesn't want the S40 anymore and I need the roominessof my 960 wagon. Now, after all this,I need to get rid of this beauty. What do you guys think is a fair price? 2001 Base S40 auto with an 18K mile engine and new Michelins.
PS. Do not run a damaged engine to move the car around, I broke the piston and it got jammed and the mechanic had to remove the engine and tranny together and open the bottom of the engine to disconnect the piston from the crank, wasting extra time for no reason.

in 2008 dollars or in 2022 dollars? Any shop can provide a quote using book rates for hours. If I were to venture a guess, I'd say labor to pull and install a replacement engine would be in the 15-20 hour range. Assume a shop rate of 125 for an indy or 150 for a dealer and you are looking at $2-3K just for labor. You can use car-part.com to find yards with used long blocks for your model. As a comparison, I had a long block replaced on my VW CC (under warranty) a few years back and the cost for the parts and labor came to $9900.
