Default My Gripes 2001

I have been very happy with my S40 up until about 10000 kms ago. I am starting to think this car is crap.

In the past few months I have had to do some major work to this thing.

I have had to replace;

Front upper sway bar bushings
Upper motor mount
Lower motor mount
Drive shaft bearing
rear wheel bearings
Ignition Coils
headlight housings
Power Antena
4 rims

I also have to get the climate control module replaced.

I very very pissed off now, this car is less than 6 years old and only has 150,000 kms on it. I just cant beleive that all this is just normal. I bought a god damn volvo for two reasons. One was for the safety and the other was reliability. So far the saftey thing has not been an issue as I have not been in an accident. but the reliability of this car is really starting to suck. I doubt I will every buy another Volvo after this. I would like to find out how many other people have had these kinds of problems with their S40's. All this crap cannot be my fault, I treat this car like gold. If I had to buy another car today I think I would go back to american, they may have problems but at least they are willing to recall stupid things like this and also the cost of parts is a hell of alot cheaper.

Thanks for letting me rant.

Zigzag, you are right....I purchased a certified 2000 S40 from a dealer with only 26K miles and has 118K now and have had these things go wrong:

fuel pump went out not once not twice but 3 times and the last time gas actually leaked into the rear floorboard.

broken axle

catalytic converter needed to be replaced...major expense!

paint is coming off of the hood

replaced coolant temp sensor

stearing wheel needed to be replaced

and a host of other smaller things

But even after all that I must admit I still like driving the car when everything is working properly and I know it would protect me in a crash. That was the main reason I bought one also, for safety. My previous car was totaled when a drunk with no license hit me on the freeway going 120 mph.

Luckily I had a 100K warranty that covered everything but the cat converter but cars like this should be a bit more reliable. Next purchase will be a Nissan Altima or Maxima!!

65K on my 2002 S40 and NO problems except temp sensor for a/c.Replaced under warranty.I treat my car well also, so I wonder why the difference in roadworthiness? It seems that if factory QC were the issue, all or most of us would have the same problems.Tech???BJ

I have a 2001 S40 and I am starting to think the car is a junk also. To many problems with only 60,000 miles on it. I love the car when it runs. I will probably never buy another volvo. I have had Toyotas with over 250,000 miles on them with no issues and never taken to the dealer.

I thought I was the only one that thought that about the 1G S40. My mom just recently traded her's in for a newer S60 because of all the problems Zigzag listed (and then some...).

It's a fun car to drive, but, just WAY too many problems past 75k miles.

Have 169,000 miles on a 2001 S40, no major issues.

His gripe was, after all, 5 years ago. I too have replaced the same stuff as him but with a 10 year old car.
