Mystery brake / anti skid problem
Hi, I bought my son an S40 2006, we have taken it to 4 garages and noone can work out how to fix this problem... I don't know what to do...
After driving for about 30 to 40 minutes the brakes engage, he has to fight with excelerator and brakes to get to a safe place to stop.
The dashboard reads "" Anti Skid Service required" Pull over safely"
He puts it in park and it locks in park and key will not come out, after about 20 minutes he can start it up again.
Does anyone know what I can do?? Single mom, quite worried,
Thanks very much,

Hello Hudini
Thank you for replying, my son's volvo is 2006 S40 FWD, eng L5-146 2.4L DOHC automatic. The weather doesnt seem to matter. But the problem happens normally when he drives about 30 minutes on the freeway, starts driving in traffic and it then the brakes freeze up .. Have you heard of this?

Never heard of this on a Volvo, sorry. I can say that normally these kinds of problems have been experienced already by someone. You just have to keep looking until you find the information.
Does the car pull to one side when the brakes freeze up? Does a wheel ever lock up or skid? I have had rubber brake lines collapse internally causing a single brake caliper to malfunction (much older vehicle). In my experience you had the car pull hard to one side when applying the brakes. Also, the brake rotor would get seriously hot on the sticking side.
It has also been my experience that the anti-skid system does not apply the brakes, it releases them. When you mash the brake pedal hard in a panic stop the anti-skid restricts brake fluid flow to any one wheel to stop it from locking up.
