Default Need help with 2005 Volvo s40 belt replacement info

Hi I have a 2005 Volvo s40 2.4L and the belt that goes around the alternator pulley needs to be replaced asap. Bought the belt from Napa took it home only to realize that there is another tensioner spot that uses a star shaped bit to release it. Problem is the star shaped bit I bought is a 3/8 bit and the hole where it should fit in seems stripped from who ever messed with it before I bought the car. Any suggestions how to replace this belt myself? And if anyone knows of a good diagram for the belt replacement is appreciated.

You have two belts and two tensioners. One is for the A/C compressor. One is for the alternator. Loosen and remove the outer belt to allow access to the inner belt. It's really critical to have the correct size star drive. I bought a small set to make sure I always have the correct one. If your tensioner is damaged though, you may have to get creative with pry bars and leverage points. I don't have any advice for that.

You can get access through the wheel well if things get tight.

If the tensioner is damaged, cut the belt off and replace the tensioner.

Good point. Don't waste time messing with someone else's mistake.
