NEWBIE S40 PROBLEM
Hi
I have bought a s40 1997 model 1.8. It runs ok but when u start the car in the morning it makes a loud whirring sound and rattlin sound from near the battery. i have been told its some sort of vacume, but i have really no idea at all as to what it is.
It goes away after a few miniutes but comes on every day.
Any help as to what it is and can it be fixed to make it quieter or replaced.
Any help would be good
thanks

That might very well be the brake system Vaccum pump.
If you can crawl under the car one morning and have someone start it and see if you can find it.
The brake vaccum pump is mounted in a black bracket behind the plastic inner fender on the left side of the car.

Soem of the pumps are just loud.
Here in the U.S. there was a recall to move the pump. You might want to check and see if your car has it where you are.
If the brakes are working fine then I would leave it for now.
That pump is what give the brakes the vaccum to work normally.
On your car the siren part of the alarm should be a horn I beleive.
The horn might be bad.

Thanks for the advice, at least i know what it is now.
ive checked the car and its just behind the batter it can clearly be seen from the top. ill leave it for now as the breaks do work well. ill have a look at the horn wiring.
Thanks again.
