Oil opinion-2001 s40
Hi everyone,
I am looking to switch over to a better oil in my 1.9t however, i would like to know if anyone has had any experience with going full synthetic on this motor being that it is turbo charged. Ive been using Royal Purple in alot of my engines over the years and have had nothing but success, however, this is my first volvo so anything is really a question to how it will act.
I want to put in Royal Purple 10w-30 high mileage synthetic in.
Anyone have prior experience with this brand in volvos?

There's no problem using synthetic oils in turbos, in fact for S40s its the better choice for keeping VVTs clean. The owner manual simply cites using oils that meet the API SG or SH standards and recommends synthetics for harder driving conditions. Personally, I'm a fan of high mileage oils since they contain seal softeners. You may want to consider a two stage change over- ie go to a high mileage blend first for the next change (to introduce the seal softeners) and then go to the full synthetic but given 2001s came from the factory ready for synthetics, you should be good to go. As to the oil weight, you can go 10/30, 5/30 or 5/40 but the choice depends on where you live (ie 5/30 is best for cold climates, 5/40 for warm).
