OIL TRAP REPLACEMENT -- 2004 volvo S40 2.5L AUTO
I went to get my car checked out because I noticed an Oil Leak and they are telling me I need my Oil Trap (PCV Valve) replaced. Pressure is building up, causing a whistle in the engine, and forcing oil out by the timing belt compartment.
How much should something like this cost at a mechanic? Is it something I can do myself? see the part is about $70 and I have a family friend who owns a Hot Rod Garage.

I'd guess in the $600-700 range for a mechanic - figure 250 in parts, 3 hours shop labor. There are vids on Youtube which show what's involved - generally the complexity is to lift the intake manifold out of the way then you need to remove all the old hoses/clamps etc, rod out the ports in the block (no sense in putting new hoses and oil separator if your block ports are clogged...). If you are going to move the intake to access the oil separator, you should do the whole system (kits are about $250) and clean out the block. You may also want to consider doing a Seafoam treatment to the oil just prior to see if you can clean out some of the sludge in the lower end. Check if there's any sludge by looking in the oil fill cap. staining is normal, gunk you can scrape off is not.
If you are getting oil forced out through the front cam seals, you may need to replace the timing belt and cam seals, not sure if you can see them behind the VVT gear to see if the seals have pushed out.
