Default P0101 CEL code

on my 2002 Volvo s40, I have been getting the Check Engine Light every couple of weeks for about a year now. Every time, I connect an OBD-II meter to it, it gives out the code P0101.

The code disappears in about a day, but it will come back in about a month. Then disappear again. Then come back.

I am unsure as to what could be wrong.

I know the code is connected to the mass air flow sensor, but I had a new MAF sensor installed about 18 months ago and it still happens.

Does the mass airflow sensor need cleaning? Does the mass airflow sensor need replacing?

It is hard to clean the mass airflow sensor?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Q - is it hard to clean the MAF? Answer - no... you can remove the MAF and clean with CFC's MAF cleaner spray and reinstall in 15 minutes.

Given you noted its new, I wouldn't suspect the MAF as the root cause... There's also a MAP sensor which measures mean atmospheric pressure that is tied into the same circuit so I'd look at that next.

Also, the MAF and throttle body need a tight seal so look for any vacuum leaks downstream from the MAF. You can also inspect the throttle body for any dirt etc too.
