I am looking to add more performance to my s40 but there are so many computers. Is there a way I can bypass the computers or maybe take them out?

 

as to adding performance, the only computer that matters is the ECU as that controls the turbo boost, timing curve, fuel enrichment etc. Just google around ie "ECU tuning Volvo S40 T5" or "chip tuning Volvo S40T5". A stage 1 tune should be good for 40 HP. if you need more, then you need to add hardware, ie 3 inch exhaust downpipe, larger intercooler, bigger injectors, new turbo with more air volume capacity. The same tuning shops will recommend a blueprint by stage to lighten your wallet .

 

And that could be enough to buy a car that had horsepower and handling you wanted to begin with! (I've done the same thing many times over the years and finally learned it's less expensive to just buy the fast car to begin with! Then I purchased a turbo Porsche, M5, M3, - but... what about the fun of spending $$$$ and still having a crappy car!)
