Default Please help "now" axel, drive shaft fluid leak

2000 s40 175k miles

replaced drive shafts due to vibration during acceleration.

also replaced sway bar end links, and steering out tie rods

I just put it all back together and the passenger side axle where it mates to transmission is leaking when i started the car. When I pulled the old shaft out a stainless steel metal coiled spring circle came out. I thought I put it back on right, but I guess not. Or I damaged the seal. I will post pics as soon as I can. I would very much want to get my girlfriends car back on the road asap as she needs it.

A schematic on how the seal is suppose to be assembled would be of great help.

Thank you very much.

If the spring from inside the seal came out, the seal needs to be replaced. There's a special tool to install it to the proper depth, but you can tap it in with a socket if you're careful.

I went to the dealership and bought a new seal. I taped it into place with a socket and it is still leaking just the same.

I am going to pull the new shaft again and measure the diameter of the shaft that inserts into the seal. It slides in very easy and I think it might be wrong diameter. Not sure what else to try.

Wow! I can't believe it. The old original shaft (passenger side) is 40mm diameter where it hits the seal and the new one is 31mm. That would allow a huge gap.

So I ordered the parts through FCP. I am not happy to say the least.

Going to install the old drive shaft back in so I at least have a car to drive while I sort this all out.

Yes it is after market. FCP does not sell OEM ones. I admit I was cheap since the volvo part is 400+ shipping and the FCP Empire brand one was $100 shipped.

OK, back home at my computer and it looks like the part #'s that are in my email order list are for a 2001. I am working on a 2000. I am angry with myself now.

Oh I've done that. Ordered the passenger side headlight lens when I needed the drivers side. Good thing you caught it before driving it.

According to FCP I wont be able to return the drive shafts. I say this because of what I read on there site for there return policy. I will still write them an email and explain what I did and try.

Even if they do take them back it seems there would be a 20% restocking fee, return shipping fee, and because I used free shipping they will then charge me for the shipping to me. This makes sense and I am not angry with them for these reason at all.

Because I don't think I can or it might not be worth returning to FCP what should I do with them? I put them on craiglist, but I don't think they will sell. Is ebay my only other option?

Also offer them up for sale here. There is a for sale section on this forum and other forums too. There were more 2001-2004 models sold than the 2000 so you should find a buyer.
