I have a 2006 S40 T5 which as far as I understand uses the M66 transmission. My clutch slave went bad and I’m trying to drop the trans to replace it. I am stuck!
I have my engine bay cleared and I’ve removed what I thought were all the trans bolts... but when I lowered the transmission the engine came with it- I didn’t let it go far enough to damage anything but just far enough that it was obvious the two were not going to separate. The obvious answer is that I did not unbolt something I should have unbolted!
One possibility is the perhaps the top bolt on the propeller housing- do those come off or stay on? There is also a bolt in the center at the bottom of the transmission that is set back toward the center of the car or rear of the transmission that was really hard to get to because of the positioning of the bolt- when I loosened it, oil started to drop so I tightened it back up... does anyone have a count of the trans bolts and their locations? I just can’t figure out what is hold these together. I’ve seen rx998r’s YouTube and read through the walkthrough on Swede speed. Everyone says the same thing: remove the bolts and drop the trans... any ideas which is the last bolt that I missed? I got the starter bolts, the torque mount bolts and the ones on top of the engine and the few in the engine bay a couple of inches down on the sides... any idea what I have missed?
rhanks I appreciate it. There is not a lot to go on!
can someone look at this and tell me if the orange arrows point to all of the trans bolts that hold the trans to the engine- make sure I haven’t missed any... and that I have the right number of bolts?
thanks! One arrow per bolt...
Any ideas? I was following a walkthrough on YT for a 2005 (Mine is 06) and they did not remove the pass drive axle... so neither did I- Does that need to come off? Is there anything else that might hold the trans on? When I remove the bolt holding it to the pass side mount from above, the trans does not separate from the engine at all... like they are still bolted together. I got the two tricky ones above the propeller shaft, the ones that used to go through the torque mount, the couple on the bottom, the couple on top and the two on the side of the trans / front of the car below where the starter was... Knowledgible sources have informed me there are 10 bolts, and I have removed at least 10... trying not to remove more than necessary.... bringing me back to the pass axle as a possible anchor, but I am open to suggestions. Also, if anyone is willing to stop by the Pottstown PA area, I'll buy you a case of your favorite beer- that's a serious offer if any takers, especially when you consider that all I have left is to drop the trans, replace the vent and slave cyl, then mate the trans to the engine and put the bolts back in, bleed the hydraulics and call it a day.... Let me know (On either count!).
I don't have an S40, but I have separated many transmissions over the years. So I will just mention that the alignment pins are at least still in play. Because of the alignment pins, you would expect to have to pry the engine and transmission apart. If it just falls apart I would count that as a surprise.
