Question Power Steering for 2003 S40

My Volvo manual says to use ATF fluid (Mobil 3309) for my power steering.... Does anyone know if this is correct or should I just go ahead & use Prestone Power steering fluid to add to my power steering reservoir? I have heard different stories & would appreciate an answer from someone who experienced this & can help solve this problem... Thanks

my understanding is 3309 is based on Dextron III with a few additives for managing viscosity and friction coefficients etc for select automatic transmissions. For power steering you don't need the extras - in fact the S40 owner's manual only says "quality ATF oil" so yes you can use 3309 or Dex II as they meets the definition. I'd say the Prestone products would also work fine - but beware some have "stop leak" ingredients and may actually not be any cheaper than ATF fluid.

i just came from Volvo and they put volvo labeled green power steering fluid in my reservoir because it was low...and the service man showed no concern about whether or not he was mixing it with the old stuff that could of been red ATF...i asked and he confirmed...yes, it could be mixed...whether he was BSing or not...i just know now that my car takes green hydraulic fluid, it cost $26 a liter and i have a peace of mind...besides that i bought an extra bottle for future flush because their price of $215 is just ridiculous...smh...thanks for the info
