Problem with steering on 2008 S40
Hi guys,
1st post here and I'm hoping I can find out about a small problem I'm having. My dealer can't seem to fix my problem. I have a really bad rattle coming from inside the steering wheel or from the column. It only happends while I have the wheel turned to 11 o'clock or 1 o'clock and farther and going over bumps. It's very loud and is kind of plastic type clunk. It will not rattle or make any noise going straight, even over rough spots in the road. Only does it while the wheel is turned.
Thanks for any help or ideas I can pass on to my dealer so I can finally get this fixed.

Update:
The dealer kept the car for 3 days and the service manager went for a ride with me so he could hear it 1st hand. They took the steering column and wheel apart and found nothing that was loose to cause the rattle. All other S40's and C30's on the lot do the same thing so the service manager who is also a Volvo tech for 28 years has an idea of what is happening. He found a little bit of play in part of the steering shaft. He feel that when the car is in a turn and hits a bump just right there is enough lateral force to cause those parts in the steering shaft to wiggle together causing the rattle and the steering wheel is acting as an amplifier amplifying the rattle. He named the parts but I can't remember what they were called.
In the end he said it is a design flaw and there really is nothing he can do to stop the noise short of redesigning the steering shaft. He said he can not use any foam or something to cushion the parts because they have to move together for steering. He did say if Volvo gets enough people complaining about this that they may come up with a fix at the factory lever and put out a service bulletin. If so he will call me but I'm not holding my breath. I guess I/we will have to live with this noise.
I feel he honestly tried to fix this. They put like 40 miles test driving the car getting it to act up. I can also tell the took apart the wheel and column so they are not just blowing smoke up ***.
It's unfortunate but I think we are stuck with this problem.

You probably do, just have not hit the right bump while turning. I test drove several S40 and C40's and allof them did it on a streach of road with a long right handcurve and several sharp but light/minor bumps. Unfortunetly I have to travel that road every day so I hear it all the time.....I bet you also have this problem.

Really listen for it. It only happends when the wheel is turned left of right(11 o'clock and further and 1 o'clock and further). I hit bumps in turns that should make it rattle but don't. It only does it in turns and while in a turn. Mine happends best around 35 MPH. It never rattles in a straight line no matter how bad the bumps. If it does not do it in one partof the raod ina bumpy turn try another. It really has to be the right kind of bump while in a turn. Thank God it does not do it all over the place or I'd go mad with all the rattles.
Listen for it for a while and I'd bet the house your car does it too. Good luck and report back.
P.S. If youare ever in northern Colorado with your S40 I'll show you the perfect road to test this out on.
