Looking for help diagnosing a steering column clicking noise.

When turning the wheel as stopped, or while the truck is in motion, the steering column makes a cracking noise that sounds like cracking plastic. Left or right.

The mechanic pulled apart the wheel, air bag, etc. yesterday down to the column and turned the wheel, and still heard the noises.

Any help is appreciated.

 

I have a 2014 XC90 with 4,000 miles on it and it was making a small clicking noice both left and right turning. The dealer ended up replacing the entire column and the diagnosis was that it had a bad bearing that was coming apart.
