Hello my problem with my 2001 Volvo S40 is when my foot press's on the break pedal and i proceed to put the car into gear, sometimes I cannot get the car out of park I would have to use the shift lock button. I think the problem is I need to replace my shift lock solenoid but am not sure if the brake switch is related to this problem. Sometimes when i push on the break pedal I can feel the solenoid on the shifter click and sometimes i can't and that is when i can't get it out of park.

Check the wire off the brake light switch first.

 

checked the wires and everything appears to be good. Any other pointers?

 

The switch might be going bad.
