Hi, I just bought a 2000 s40 and have been having a few minor issues, which have been worrying me after reading many consumer reviews. first off, what do you guys think of this car? waste of money? or something worth hanging onto?
second.. maybe youve heard of these issues before and can give me some insight?
after driving the car, lets saying, running errands, shutting it on and off several times, it randomly doesnt want to start. it doesnt turn over ... if it sits for a good 30 mins to an hour its good to go. this happens a few times a week.. I heard it could be the starter relay? know anything?
thats the only MAJOR issue.. just feeling unsure about this car.. I do love it, but dont want a crappy car.. hope someone can help!![Confused](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Thanks,
Claire

Short answer: Yes, it can be a good car.
They need a fair bit of TLC to keep running and in good order. They don't take kindly to skipping services. First thing; you didn't mention how many miles are on the car.
List of things to replace/ look at:
1. Make sure the brake pads are meaty!![Smile](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
2. Spark plugs (replace with OEM)
3. Ignition coils (make sure they are not cracked and replace with OEM)
4. Spark plug wires (make sure the rubber is not cracked (replace with OEM or ipdusa.com wires)
5. Are you getting vibration in the steering wheel? It may need engine mounts.
6. FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR! (one of the most common problems can cause hard starts)

Overall S40's are nice city cars with a little zip for the times you feel like having fun.
