How do I install a new Radio to a 2004 Volvo S40?

 

Pretty much impossible from what I have heard. Too many different components reliant on each other for proper function. I just had to have my DIM rebuilt, but thought I could drive the car without it, which is possible, but with the DIM out the climate controls would sometimes work with no adjustment possible, and other times would not shut off despite the key being off and removed from the ignition. I believe the only thing you can really do is replace it with another oem unit, but even then you will need to go to the dealer to get the ECM to recognize it.

 

Do you mean the newer 2004.5 S40 with a 2.4L engine? This has the waterfall display that does not have an aftermarket replacement.

Now if yours is the old style 2004 S40 with 1.9L turbo engine then you can fit any single DIN aftermarket radio by using a plastic pocket designed to fit a double DIN space. Or just use a double DIN radio.
