Rubbing/Grinding Noise

Rubbing/Grinding Noise
I am just back here seeking advice again. Tech, Volvotechky, and others, thanks for your previous help; I finally figured out how these timing systems work, thanks in great part to your advice.
This new problem concerns a new noise I have with my 2000 S40. Here, in Indiana, it was cold ~25 this morning and when I started the car, I got a very brief rubbing, almost grinding noise, that went away almost immediately, but was loud. I am not sure what it could be, and the only time it sounds like this is when it is really cold outside, and when the engine is started after sitting overnight. At first I was worried that it might be some internal parts rubbing together, but there is plenty of oil and the temperature is well above the pumping temperature of the oil I use. Right now I can only think of maybe 2 things: the serpentine (accessories)belt or possibly the mounts. I admit that I am due for a set of mounts all around, but the sound today lastedlonger than the typical impact sounds the broken mounts usually make. I am loathe to put more money into the car, it's at 172,000 miles, and now relegated to mostly grocery-getter status' but it is my original baby, and I want to keep it up.
Any suggestions, insights, or funny stories?
Thanks
