S40 2001 Stalls after starting
Hi there,
I recently bought my Volvo S40 2001 and it was working just fine. But it started to give this problem where it stalls right after I start the engine.
I changed the battery, and also put some oil. It worked for a while but my hopes faded quickly. It runs smoothly but the real problem is when I try to start it, it stalls dead on! The check engine, the battery and engine oils check light are on after it happens (even the up arrow).
Also, to make it start, I have to push the gas pedal + brake and boost it to 3000 rpm so it can properly idle. At this point, i know something really bad is going on with the engine but i dont know what.
Can someone help me?
Thanks.

From your other post:
Either the Idle Air Control motor or the Fuel Pressure Regulator. I'd suggest cleaning the IAC motor first before replacing. Also, check the fuel pressure first before buying a new regulator.

Hey man I had this issue last week and Hudini really helped me out. Ultimately my issue was my IAC Valve.
My first suggestion would be to do a couple of checks to just inspect things a little further. You can buy some throttle body cleaner for like $4 at an auto store and clean out the IAC and throttle body. If you need any help with finding those and getting them off, let me know. You may also want to buy a new IAC gasket before doing this. Of course, you just must be careful not to rip it when it's coming off. If you rip it and don't have a new one, I read that some guy made one out of cardboard and it worked. Don't take my word for it, though.
If you clean the IAC valve and the car is fixed you're golden. I cleaned mine and it helped but then a month later, it obviously died. I found a replacement part for $125 on Amazon -
Seems to work great, but I'm also having more issues with my S40 right now, so who knows maybe it's a dud. I doubt it though.

Well so far from what I've read, IAC Valve is the most popular problem. I will consider the Fuel Pressure Regulator too. So I'll follow your advice (except for cardboard part) and keep you posted.
Thanks again for the help
