S40 Check Engine Light
I have a 2000 Volvo S40. I have had it almost two years, and it has spent at least 6months of those two years in the shop. The check engine light comes on atleast once a month if not more than that. I have taken it to the dealership where I purchased it and they can never seem to find out what the problem is. Sometimes it drives fine, sometimes it very rough and won't start. The light just came on again last night, and I just got it out of the shop about 4 weeks ago. They said a hose had come off and that's what caused the light to come on last time. It's got a little over 72,000 miles on it, and it only have 32,000 on it when I bought it in November of 2003. Any ideas of what I should do? I have had to put thousands of dollars into this thing, and it's always giving me problems. Anyone else have the same problem?
A disconnected hose? I would get this checked out ASAP to make sure that there are no harmful gas leaks. You can take it to AutoZone and they will run the codes for you as well. It may also be a sensor problem and those are fairly expensive to replace (around $1,000). I also have the check engine come on periodically. However, my problem is not serious. I would confirm this with your car. The bottom line is that if you're experiencing constant problems and the car is spending much time in the shop - sell it. It should be saying that it's time to part with this Volvo and look for another.
The dealer says that it has all of the most current software upgrades. I am taking it to AutoZone today to have them read the codes...will let you know what comes up. Thanks for your help!
Autozone codes will most likely not be the same codes as the Volvo PC will have. Or will they, in my experiences they wont.

The info that can be accessed is AWESOME.
The P codes give a general Idea of the problem. There is differences between the p codes and the Volvo codes. I have seen some that don't even match at all.

I know you may have done this, but when my check engine light came on I went thorugh all of the caps and dipsticks to make sure they were tight. I found the transmission fluid dip stick to not be pushed in all the way. I pushed it tight and the light went off. Obviously that was a quick fix, but my not be your problem.
check engine light has been on on mine for the last 7 months VOLVO store stated that very common on these cars something about sensors being too sensitive??had a complete check on my car and they found nothing
