Had AC replaced on 2004 S40 and now the 2 dash speakers only work. Mechanic is telling me that is is cooincidental but he believs the raiio is now bad and needs to be replaced. Any opinions because I have had the car for 10 years with 140,000 miles on it and now all of sudden he does work in the dash area and radio suddenly goes out. I have read where it might be something with the amp (?)

 

You did check the radio settings to make sure the balance is 0?

Otherwise, might be a cut wire or loose wire or loose connection. Could be allot of things. Just have to pull the radio and check the speaker wire continuity.

I too would suspect it was the result of the recent work.

Fade and balance are at 0. I actually pulled the unit out and the 2 harness plugs with all the wires connected look to be fine. However, the plug on the bottom right (looking at the back of the unit) is not plugged in. From what I have researched this is for the antenna and notthing to do with the speakers. I have read online where somebody had the same problem and had to do an "amp bypass" which I have no clue to what this is.

They are claiming that my head unit has gone bad and I need a new one. I can get a used one on ebay for about $40. I am probalby going to get one and if this doesn't fix it I will guess have to take to a dealer.

 

I tossed the original and got an aftermarket single DIN sized unit with CD and mounted a tray in the remaining space (Original is double DIN). There are some really nice double DIN units on the market with all kinds of features like GPS, Sat radio, Aux input, handsfree bluetooth for your mobile phone, etc.

Any used ones off ebay will need the theft code. Make sure the seller has it.
