This has happened a couple of times lately. When I shift, the depressed portion of my shifter stays depressed and does not want to come out and lock my car in gear? Whats up with that?

 

The locking mechanism at the bottom of the shifter gets gunked up with dirt and spilled drinks, etc. It's very common. You remove the plastic shifter surround and spray generously with silicone spray on the solenoid and associated hardware until everything works freely. If your shift bulb is out this is a good time to fix that too.
