Default should I listen to dealer or go with gut? engine code issue

I have an 05, 2.4 180k on it. and I've been chasing down the elusive bank one too rich code and finally broke down and had the dealership do a diagnostic check on it.
the codes they came up with were ecm 250a & 261a.

they recommended changing the oil trap unit, due to it being clogged.

here's the dilemma, I started working on it and the hose on the left side running up to the top was in my hands as soon as I removed it from the unit, broke in half. of course nothing visual, the break was right under the intake. I called the dealer and they ran a pressure test and it showed 0 which would rule out the hose being broken.

I think that has been the issue all along. should I swap the trap too? I did order one from amazon.

any thoughts
thanks
Paul

Clogged pcv systems are very common with mileage like that - sometimes once you get the oil trap off you find the oil drain passage into the pan is clogged also - and that requires pan removal to solve.

the broken hose is just an added feature? :-)

can the clog be cleaned out with compressed air, cleaner or ? vs pulling the pan if it's clogged.

The pan usually has to come off. If the oil drain passage is clogged you would want to clean the (what looks like) granulated charcoal out of the pan also and replace the partially clogged oil pickup tube.

well it's done! I should have listened to my gut... it was clean no clogs or anything.
I swapped it anyways.

in the process of putting everything back together, and hopefully the codes go away.
only thing left is the vacuum switch, some place in the cowl I've been told

thanks

There are many codes that won't go away until you read and erase them.

I've always had the codes go away on their own once a problem has been fixed. are you saying that's not the case with Volvos?

codes are stored in the computer memory until erased. Disconnecting the battery etc doesn't clear the codes. For some codes, the check engine light may go away but they are still stored... This is the same with all cars, not just Volvo.

evap codes (like from a loose gas cap will go away) - customers want the light off - so I don’t have any experience just waiting to see what happens and it takes less than a couple of minutes to clear them. Some auto parts stores might read and clear them for free.

I bought my son a $30 Centec at Harbor Freight, plus there are some bluetooth ones on Amazon that work with an app on your phone for similar cost. Nice to be able to check / clear codes powertrain/emissions codes at will.
