RE: slow start and vibrations at certain rpms and certain speeds
Please note that my knowledge on the S40 is very limited but I do the best until Moderator Tech or other S40 owners can reply.
First, visit a local AutoZone to see if there are any trouble codes in the engine control computer (ECU), as well as the transmission control computer (this one may have to be done at a dealer). No recalls have been issued for '01 S40 for the engine. The exhaust may be blocked, keeping from the RPM to climb, or there may be problem in the ignition system. If S40 comes with DIS (Distributorless or Direct Ignition System; each spark plug has its own secondary coil pack), the coil pack may be faulty. When was the last time the car received a good tune-up, BTW?
If all engine systems turn out fine, then the engine mounts may be starting to age. In general, rubber parts begin to get tired after 5 years.
See what others have to say. This is the best I can do at the moment, I may be able to help more if you could provide more details as to the car's conditions.
Sorry I couldn't help you better.
